Teenagers in court over park rape

Five teenage boys have appeared in court accused of raping a 15-year-old girl in a park in Greater Manchester. The teenager was attacked in Queen’s Park, close to Bolton town centre, in the early hours of Thursday. The five boys, all aged between 13 and 17, were arrested on Friday and appeared in two sittings at Bolton Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.

Three of the boys - aged 13, 16 and 17 - were remanded in custody and two 16-year-olds were released on bail. In the first sitting, two 16-year-olds spoke only to confirm their names and give their dates of birth.

Bail refused

They were released on bail on the condition that they are electronically tagged to ensure a home curfew of 1900 BST to 0700 BST. The court heard that the pair are not allowed to enter Bolton town centre, contact the victim or witnesses, or use computers - except for educational reasons.

The three other accused boys were then led into the dock and also spoke to confirm their names and dates of birth. Bail applications were made but they were placed on remand. All five will appear at Bolton Youth Court on Wednesday.

A serial molester within 10 minutes

NOT satisfied with molesting a 14-year-old girl once, a neighbour went back to her house and harassed her for the second time for half an hour, reported Harian Metro. The man, in his 20s, visited the girl when she was alone in her house in Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur.

According to a police source, the man told her he wanted to take some Hari Raya (aka Eid Ul-Fitr) goodies at 6.30pm last Tuesday, and the victim allowed him to enter the house because they knew each other.

“After taking the goodies, he left but returned not long after and molested her,” the source said.

The man went home after the incident, but returned to the girl’s house 10 minutes later and did the same thing for almost half an hour.

JK Rowling denied top US honour

Harry Potter author JK Rowling missed out on a top honour because some US politicians believed she “encouraged witchcraft”, it has been claimed. Matt Latimer, former speech writer for President George W Bush, said that some members of his administration believed her books promoted sorcery.

As a result, she was never presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The claims appear in Latimer’s new book called Speechless: Tales of a White House Survivor. He wrote that “narrow thinking” led White House officials to object to giving Rowling the civilian honour.

The award acknowledges contributions to US national interest, world peace or cultural endeavours. Past literary recipients of the award include John Steinbeck and Harper Lee.

Others denied the privilege under the Bush administration included Senator Edward Kennedy, who died in August this year. Latimer claimed, in his book, that the veteran politician and health care activist was excluded because he was deemed to be too liberal.
